MG MGA - rare MGA

I like the idea of a FULLY REFUNDABLE deposit, but only after winning the bid. This is to eliminate the lookers. The poor man cannot even spell correctly so what happens if you win and send deposit but decline to accept the car? YOU LOSE. The car looks beautiful but too me something smells a little fishy. Why not reveal the serial number of the hard-top if in fact it exists.Could it be a missing top?Stranger things have happened. Sandy |
Sandy Sanders |
Smell funny to me too, like that 100k mga we had not too long ago, he is also very agressive one any future buyer, makes it hard to believe to any statement he makes Some pple are really strange, Cheers, Jean Marc |
Jean Marc |
No inspections till after you've won the auction? Sounds like there is something to hide. Any one with a genuine car is happy for people to check it out. |
Lisa Drew |
A friend of mine bought a concourse quality 59 Corvette with a Factory hardtop. When the car arrived the top was missing. He later located it on E-bay and had the police pick it up. It had already been sold and the money collected twice. An employee of the shipping company was the thief. My friend did get the top and the new buyers were left without money or a top. Any listing that won't show numbers is more likely a scam than not. The guy argues with himself one line says the car is in Itaska Illinois another says somewhere in southern Calif. In the description he says you can see car by appointment then later says only after wnning and paying. The car is neither rare nor special it is just a MK11 that the PO might have raced at a local something. Read the answers to Questions he is one rude operator, especially to the guy that ask if the fender welting was painted. The pictures are so poor I wondered the same thing. As strange as this ad looks I'd want someone to verify that the guy in Illinois who takes the money really has a car in California to sell. |

Wiring looks like a barn job |
R. L Carleen |
Looks like the car was photographed in California two years ago. That doesn't look like Illinois in March 2006. Something is rotten in Denmark. |
Pete W. |
He states he is selling for a friend. Therefore the "item location" is his location as entered when he signed up to eBay, while the car is probably at the owner's home in California. Still a stupid way to run an auction. Even with a refundable deposit I doubt I would bid on it without the ability to inspect it beforehand. That's just asking to get in a big fight over the car when you ask for your money back. |
Steve Simmons |
I have an Alloy hardtop and the number is not visible when it is trimmed, well not on mine anyway! |
Bob (robert) I am turning? yes I once owned an MGWasp!! |
I came out and asked him why he was so impolite and secretive. This is his reply Thank you for taking the time to give me some constructive critisism. It is appreciated. i have been TOTALLY FORTHRIGHT in answering ALL questions. If you are refferring to the one that asks' what my reserve price is think again. THAT is the whole point of a reserve auction, to let the Lot find its' value amongst the bidders. Also this individual had the worst Feedback I ever saw on e-bay. It was 84%! He is a deadbeat.i am trying to be courtious but it is hard when you are dealing with the public. As far as the discussion goes on the MG BBB thread, that there is something wrong with my auction i am open to suggestions. Instead of carping like a bunch of old washerwomen start asking Me some normal questions. As far as my trite remark on the Bugatti it was meant in a light hearted way.MG people in general are not all that easy to deal with, i know, i am and have been an MG guy for for more then 40 years. No one can poke fun at them and myself better then me.i have always lived these cars and always will as well as the people that own them.Ciao, Peter Respond to this question in My Messages. |
Gordon Harrison |
Seller sounds like someone who has had unpleasant transactions but I don't believe fraudulent. The remark about old washerwomen makes me laugh but isn't that the nature of BBS forums...remember everybody jumping all over that LA Times guy who wrote an amusing article about MGAs last year. Also sometimes our remarks can sound a little jealous. I think the car looks nice! (ps. my alloy hardtop has no serial number) |
Jim P |
Well hello all you MG enthusiasts.I would like to introduce myself. My name is Peter Fino. I am the owner of the 1962 MGA MKII 1600 W/factory alloy hardtop.Yes Sandy from Florida I CAN spell and if you won the auction your deposit would be PROMPTLY refunded if you did not want the A for ANY REASON after inspecting it. Also you can see the hardtop in a few of the pics, it is REALLY there. If you read further I have agreed to have the deposit in escrow in a bank.As far as the Number of the hardtop goes I don't know what it is because I have never looked for it so R.J. Brown there is no scam. Look at my feedback on e-bay it's perfect. I live in Illinois and I bought the MGA 2 years ago and decided that the $1,750.USD.Enclosed transport was to dear at the time. It has been left with a long time friend of mine who is also a CAR GUY.Pete W. the pics were taken 2 years ago in California and the car is not "rotting in Denmark" as you suggested.I rather think of it as slightly "fermenting" like fine wine. Jean Marc the only smell coming from this auction is the smell of "mildew, old leather, oil and gas".Thats'Brit Car Guy Cologne. Lisa Drew I have nothing to hide. Like I said I will answer all questions to the best of my ability. Steve Simmons, what would you do as far as running the auction goes? Have everybody that requests an inspection "come on down" and kick the tires till they fall off? As of this writing I have had 18 requests to view the car.I could just see my friend driving the 17 miles from his house 18 times or more to show the car. |
P Fino |
To continue. My friend would kill me if I imposed on him like that. Gordon Harrison, thank you ever so much for bringing the shortcomings of my auction to light. All you listers should take note. Then there is Jim P. from California. Jim I really like you. Your a MG guy, have a sense of humor, and told it like it was. "Cheers" to you. Steve Simmons, you can come and inspect the A without sending a deposit if you would like.LOL. Ciao, Peter Fino |
P Fino |
thanks Peter I'm embarrased. But Steve Simmons is one of the most pleasant chaps I have met, and his MG is nicer than mine. And he has more of them... |
Jim P |
Friends, Run, don't walk from this. If you open up the pictures you can hear the car rusting from 2,000 miles away. I am a serious collector of classic cars and have never heard or seen such a bunch of nonsense. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it......... I can still hear the white noise of rusting frame and fire wall. Fore warned is fore told. |
Bob Rowe |
I've known Peter for over 24 years, was very active in the Chicago MGA Club. Has for just as many years been buying and selling British cars and in my opinion would been run out of town a long time ago if he was not on the up and up |
gary starr |
Hey Gary, thanks for the vote of confidence. I haven't seen you in many years. Do you still have that beautiful Iris Blue FHC? I always loved that car. Hows Mary? Do you guys still attend the BCU event? Great to hear from you. Ciao, Peter PS. Message to mister BOB from the RUST BELT...QUACK QUACK. |
P Fino |
to P. Fino I too would like to see the car before bidding. Why don't you arrange one or two showings this weekend to all who want to inspect it can. Maybe if you do, the price will go up $$$$$$$$$$$$. That way your friend won't have to make a bunch of trips and you may get an herina hauling all the extra money that you will make by doing this. |
JEFF BECKER |
Dear Mr. P or is it Pee. You sir, appear to be the quack. The rust belt lies under the bonnet of your scam. Hey Gary, Hillary knew Bill for a long time too and look what she got. Blew her away. Any seller of rebute does not play these games. To those who bid beware. Remember in Shakespeare - "Me think he doth protest too much." Keep protesting Mr. Pee. |
Bob Rowe |
Peter - you sound like a curmudgeon after my own heart. Having spent hours on many a w*nker who came to waste my time looking, having no chance at all of actually buying whatever I had for sale, I can sympathize. I have no idea if your auction methodology will work or not, but I could see myself doing something similar. I have a garage full fo stuff I don't really need (couple of factory MGA hardtops, crossflow heads, Webers, engine blocks etc.), but I haven't sold it for just that reason. That and the fact that the heavy stuff is a PITA to ship, especially from 'up here' in Canada. Good luck with your auction - it looks to be a decent if somewhat non-original Mk 2 (I own a Mk 2 coupe). And for the guy that asked about buying a roll bar with stickers - how about if I scraped some of the old tech stickers off the bar on my Twincam race car and glued them onto a piece of exhaust pipe (shipping weight, you know) - think I could sell it on ebay.....? |
Bill Spohn |
Funny how some people still insist on saying "the guy's a cheat", even when others here give him five star references. Sure it's not the most conventional way to run an auction, but if you don't like it, you don't have to bid. I'm sure that if Steve S or Jeff does go to see it, he'll give an honest and informed report (Steve do you have any room for it, your new garage was already full with the existing collection!) Compare it to the guy that is selling a "NEW UNUSED" steering wheel that is cracked where the spokes enter the rim - how unused is that? Auctions like this can represent a bargain. I just picked up a set of loudspeakers that I have wanted for 15 years - Quad ESL63. The auction was also a little unconventional, but I took the gamble after talking nicely to the guy (and he even delivered them to my Dad's place and was really a nice guy apparently). Result - I bought a pair of speakers that normally go on ebay for $2500 for a princely $800. They have been at the manufacturer this week for a check and service - nothing wrong at all. They arrive here next week and I can't wait. (earplugs already on order for the neighbours!). It's a free world, let the guy in peace and think positive thoughts unless you have valid reason to be suspicious (and with these references, I don't think suspicion is justified.) |

Bill S. If you ever need help cleaning out your garage let me know, i will be on the next ferry with a pick up truck ( or do I need something larger?) to help get those pesky MGA hardtops out of your way! Seriously though I can sympathize, my "E" bay experiences run about 50% to completion, allways seems to be a) did not know i was going to win? ( why the f*ck did you bid on it then???) b) don't have all the money right now ( see answer to question "a" ) c) my wife would kill me if I brought home another car. ( well if I knew where you lived, i would probabley kill you too for wasting my time). |
Mitch Smith |
Mike , A BEAUTIFULL answer. You got it right on the head. If it is an auction ....then don't raise your hand to scratch your head and then say,"I din't know". About the only other thing that puts me off about Ebay is the number of things I have needed and would have bought except..."Will Only Ship To The United States". AAAAHHHEEE. Pure frustration. Good luck with your auction Peter. |
Gordon Harrison |
Hi Peter- Every one here is fine, Mary retired in 2001, Greg is a junior at Western, that in it's self is enough to make one feel old, and yes I still have the coupe. I try each year to go to the BCU, I'll keep an eye out for you. Don't know what car to find you in tho. Take care, hope all is well. Gary |
gary starr |
Dominic - the ESL63s won't exactly blow the house down but they certainly are louder than the original Quads - which are still great speakers, if you have a power amp that will drive them without frying them! |
Bill Spohn |
Bill Quad 606, 66 complete setup. Should sound exquisite... Dominic |

Peter, I did not mean my comment to be insulting but rather helpful. After explaining the location discrepancy, I was merely stated that there is no way I would ever bid on a car and then pay money without inspecting it first. You may be an honest guy, but I nor anyone else browsing eBay has any way to know that. So it should be understandable that most people would be very hesitant to bid on your auction. I have seen too many online transactions go very bad when it appeared intentions were sincere at the start. If you aren't going for top dollar then it probably does not matter, but allowing viewings of the car would increase potential bids tremendously and dissuade the mistrust seen in this thread and undoubtedly in the average eBay bidder. That is what I meant when I said that I don't agree with the way the auction is being run. Dominic, no more MGs for me! If I buy another one it will cost me ten times the purchase price to build a garage to house it! And I already have enough maintenance to keep me busy for a while anyway. Anyone wanna work on a M.G.? ;) |
Steve Simmons |
Steve, After rereading your listing I understand fully what you were saying. I do realize that your intent was not to attack. I guess after ALL the OFF list and OFF e-bay mail that I received I became very offended. In all my years in business the MOST valued thing to me is my reputation. I have taken the proverbial PIPE to keep it that way.I am very straight forward when I do business. When I want something I do my due dilagence and pull the trigger. My time is too dear to do other wise. My coming off as too agressive and ornery was probably because of this.I normally wholesale to dealers who don't question me or my decriptions because of past performance. I wanted to try a car on e-bay and now I know.I would rather get four root cannels and a circumcision. Kind regards, Peter |
