MG MGA - Rattle in front disc brake
For some time now I have been mystified by a rattle from the front RH brake disc, especially noticeable on rough roads..I've just found out that when I brake, the rattle stops. There is a fair bit of movement in the pad retaining spring, which I think may be the cause. How do you firm this up, as abviously there is play with the brake pads when not being used?..when braking, the pads tension up the retaining spring, and the rattle stops. |

It should be easy to bend the retaining spring so that it has some tension against the pads. But if you have dust covers fitted they could be the culprit. Excessive play in the wheel bearings or excessive disc runout could cause the disc to touch the dust cover. This noise would probably also stop when you apply the brakes. Mick |

Gary Had the same problem, actually found the pin had started to work its way out. Adjusted the spring just that little too much, resulting in me having to contact my friendly mg spares shop. Couple of days later all good, new spring fitted no rattle and back on the road. |

Gary I had exactly the same rattle- Spring was loose -took out spring and bent it slightly -problem solved Ihave purchased new springs and pins to replace next time the wheel is off . Paul MGA Mk2 Coupe |

Gary, I noticed in a couple of my old springs there were hair line cracks along the bending axis - it might be worth having a close look if you have already. Mike |
