MG MGA - Re-chroming ????
Our local chrome shop just called me with the estimate for my MGA front 3 piece bumper and two over-riders...they r very straight but need to be chromed....$800.00....there must be shops around the country that I could send these and other parts to be chromed for a lot less than that...your experiences...oh yes, 1 front headlight rim $80.00...thanks again for all the great help and advice... |

Hi Mike. Chroming is labour intensive and therefore expensive, but I suspect those prices are extremely high! You could purchase a new front bumper for much less than the price of re chroming. There seen to be a few suppliers of new front bumpers. I think Scarborough Faire out of Rhode Island makes their own front bumper set, which I hear fits very well, and is of good quality. Cheers! Thanks for the info Glenn...I realize this is Ca. but I might like to have an original item re-chromed at some point and would like to know if there is a shop that might be a little less expensive....must be someplace in the USA that someone is happy with the service and price...thanks, once again.... |

I just had the bumpers done at Denver Bumper in Colorado for $650.00. They came out great! They had holes drilled in them, and they were bent. Now they look like new. Thanks Denver Bumper!!! |

Mike. There is a place here in the Phoenix area which does a lot of custom chrome work for the "hot rod" community and has an excellent reputation within the south-west. It was recommended by a body shop in New Mexico. Overall, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has killed off most of the "good quality--medium priced" plating shops. The EPA regulations have driven most of the local radiator repair shops out of business. California has tighter standards than the EPA. One fellow I spoke with had his parts replated in Mexico. No EPA, very good quality and much lower cost that was available here in the US. Might be worth checking on. Les |

Sherm's in Sacramento does very good work. You could also try Lodi Chrome in Lodi. Sherm's did a bunch of plating for me a year or so ago, and while they took a long time, the work was very good and I don't recall the prices being as eye-popping as what you quoted. I don't have direct experience with Lodi Chrome, but I've seen their work on cars at a couple of shows, and it looked very nice. |

That's high = $4-500 would be a decent deal though and you'd end up with a far better product than the garbage passing as new these days. |
