MG MGA - Rear Bearing Cap
I noticed on Barney's site he refers to the "Rear Service Memo 212" that states to minimze rear main oil leaks, drill two holes in bearing. My question is, I have the bearing cap pictured below with the stem out the bottom. Would this modification benifit me? Could I just do this with a hand drill or must this be "Machined"? Thanks |

That would be here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/care/csm/mg212.pdf This was done by the factory from engine number 40106 and continuing through end of 1500 engine production. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/care/csm/mg229.pdf The mg212 memo refers to modifying earlier engines. I have never done this. Mostly I just let the thing leak, as long as it's not too bad. I'm pretty handy with special mods using hand tools, but I wouldn't try that one with a hand drill. The reason for the drill jig is because it is drilled into an angled surface. This could be done without the special drill jig using a milling machine if the setup angle and position can be determined. The 1600 engine has a different casting for the rear main cap, does not have the screwed in down pipe, be does have two large horizontal drilled holes. See attached picture. |
