MG MGA - rear brake cylinder rebuild
Any trick to removing the piston/dust cover from the rear brake cylinder, mine seems to be really stuck on. Thanks, George |

George, It has been covered somewhere before, but place the cylinder in a pot of boiling water (check with the wife first as to which pan to use).. the thermal expansion properties of the piston, as opposed to the body, are different, and the parts should come apart. Cheers, Doug |

If it doesn't come out with high pressure air, connect a grease gun and pump it out. |

Hi George. Your cylinder is seized because the cylinder is aluminum, and the piston is steel. The 2 metals interact to create white corrosion that locks the piston in the cylinder. Once you get the cylinder apart, you may find that the corrosion has pitted the cylinder bore, making a rebuild impossible, unless you have the cylinder sleeved with brass or stainless steel. Good luck, GLenn |
