MG MGA - rear drum brake springs issue

I am installing new rear brake cylinders and brake shoes. After installing the rear cylinder I an having trouble with the springs. I set the top shoe with springs attached, large one toward the cylinder. Then I hang he bottom shoe on the two springs and pry into place. However the smaller spring keeps coming loose. I installed the shoes without the smaller spring and measured it between the two outer holes in the shoes and it appears too longe to be tight. Not sure what I did wrong and how to correct the issue. I mounted the rear cylinder at the bottom of the banking plate hole.

Do you have the shoes mounted correctly? Should be like this photo. Contrary to others it doesn't matter if the springs are front or back.

I do them like this, placing the top shoe in place with beehive, attach the retract springs between the shoes then hinge the lower one on both ends and fix with the beehib^ve spring.

Terry,
I seem to remember hearing there is an error in the workshop manual, if that’s what you are following you’re better to use Dominics photo as a guide.
