MG MGA - Rear end
Me again, I recently completed rebuilding the rear end on the 1600, i.e., new oil seals, bearings, brakes cylinders/shoes. I connected the drive shaft. When turn the drive shaft, the rear hubs turn...great! When I turn the rear hubs, the drive shaft doesn't move? Also, when I turn the drive shaft and hold tight to the rear hub, the shaft turns but I don't feel any transfer to the rear hub? What's up with that? Thanks again! |

This is all perfectly normal it is the diff doing its job. You will notice that whilst you had hold of one hub and turned the driveshaft the other hub turned. When in normal use if you lifted one rear wheel off the ground and let the clutch out the rear wheel on the ground would not turn yet the one in the air would spin! |
Bob (robert) yes Y8 is toast again :) |
I don't understand why then when I turn either hub, the drive shaft doesn't move also? |

When you turn one of the hubs, does the other hub turn in the oposite direction? If it does, that is normal. The hubs turn easier than the drive shaft. If you hold one hub still, and turn the other one, then the drive shaft should turn. If it doesn't you have a problem. |

I'll give that a try. Thanks! Now if I can just get the rockers repaired correctly I'll be well on my way to getting to the fun stuff! |
