MG MGA - rear end twitch
When I come off the throttle at about 50-60 mph, the car twitches to the left, requiring a slight steering correction. Vice versa for booting it again. Are my axle U bolts comung loose? |

Yes they are. Just get under there and snug them up tight. Left alone they will eventually start wearing grooves in the axle. |

Check the rear u bolts...the rear shocks the rear spring eye bolts and shackles. Make sure everything is tight and in good working order. ...then check the front shocks...the four bolts that hold the steering rack and the U joints on the drive shaft. I've had all of these areas at different times cause a pull or vibration. Once found and sorted out the car traveled flawlessly and is very fun and surprisingly forgiving in handling. You'll find it! :-) and goodluck! |

Thanks for the help. The U bolts were definitely slack on the LHS and had a slight gap between pad and spring on the RHS. Reefed them down good and hard! Should these nuts be locknutted? The catalog shows 20 nuts for the U bolts plus the shackes, but only depicts single nuts. It is several years ago (~ 10) that I installed the axle and driven 4000 miles the last 2 years. Is there a harder pad than rubber available? Art |

Just test drove it after tightening the bolts - magic! It now goes straight and no "floaty" feeling in my backside. |

The factory Service Parts List definitely shows double nuts, 16 required for 4 U-bolts. FNZ106 Nut, U-clip (16) Flat Nut Zinc 3/8" Hexagonal Nuts - Ordinary UNF Standard Strength |
