MG MGA - rear spring front bushing
what is the trick to getting old perished-but-rusted-in-place bushings out? One side has surrendered with me having to cut a slot in the outer sleeve, but the other side is proving harder to persuade.....it won't move under any pressure or hammering or torching..... |

Pencil grinder? |

Usually the hacksaw cut does the job, have you cut this second one - If you've got the spring out , it would pump out in a press easily |

I can't get the rubber to separate from the outer sleeve enough to get a blade in, so I will take the spring to mechanic who does my normal car and ask him to press it out. |

Maybe grind the back of the blade down to fit in, then use handle hack saw or use a mini hacksaw https://www.google.com.au/shopping/product/9759240262615825894?lsf=seller:100794174,store:12125427786486148102&prds=oid:16188525012799685727&q=mini+hacksaw+bunnings&hl=en-au&ei=iw4QX8yGNteb9QO6uprwBQ&lsft=gclid:Cj0KCQjw9b_4BRCMARIsADMUIyppr5vgbXNYy02qhvtVl0BiZj2-CO3O5avV3zqK-aqKhhVS1I3HpnYaAl7AEALw_wcB,gclsrc:aw.ds Mike |

Take the spring outside and burn the rubber. |
Dirk Van Ussel |
Some bushing material(silicone rubbers) is highly carcinogenic if you breath the smoke or touch the burnt residue I usually use a circle saw (aerial hole cutter)in from each side to cut the rubber out then hacksaw cut the sleeve if i'm not near a press willy |
William Revit |
Or you can use a small drill and drill out the rubber. I like Willy's idea best though |

The local Fiat garage pressed it out for me. It took one ton pressure to break it free! |

Good stuff Dominic--Nothing like the cracking sound of something stuck coming loose--that winning feeling is hard to beat |

You can get around 1 tonne clamping force with a bench vice. Mike |

I tried the vice way, but found I was moving the workbench when leaning on the lever. Sometimes a press is the only way, and I have looked at them many times but just don't have the space. Now I am running down activities, I won't be buying anything new on the tools front. I think this will be the last big project as it is really leaving me exhausted after a four hour stretch. My Fiat mechanic didn't want paying, but I had expected that, and had taken a bottle of Australian wine from Clancy's which made him laugh. He will always be helpful because I treat him right! |

To close off, the new bushes pressed in with the bench vice, and all is now reassembled

Tractors is where I started TE50 aka little grey fergy..... I had no idea that there were more vineyards in the extended family.... https://www.peterlehmannwines.com/wine/2016-clancys-red-blend/ But there is a common thread, IH cars used the same Holley 1904 carb as an MGA Judson supercharger! |
