MG MGA - Rear Wheel Lock Up When Braking
Probably me worrying about nothing again, but twice recently my rear wheels have locked up and slid during moderately heavy braking - made a mother with pushchair jump this morning, and she was not even wanting to cross the road! I have been driving this car for 10 years and know how it handles and feels, so this has surprised me. I have discs on the front, drums on the rear. As many of you know, I recently rebuilt the MC after a bad leak from the MC clutch banjo. All new seals fitted. System thoroughly bled and brakes feel the same as before - good solid feel, no sponginess. Rear adjusters correctly set etc. Anything I should look at? Steve PS. No Le Mans banter Terry!! My rear bumper still intact! Anything I should be looking at |

rear end lube leaking from the axel seals can cause shuddering and grabbing of the brakes. Also look at the pivot points and hold down springs for the brake shoes, if they are moving around it is possible they are binding between the drum and the pivot point. |

The brakes? This is a common problem with A's, mine used to do it until I improved the front brakes, try filing a leading edge onto the rear shoes, this should help reduce grab. Try Bob, I think he sells harder shoes. You could fit an in-line compensator. Terry |

John and Terry Certainly a thought. I pulled out the half shafts a month or so ago to convert to a 3.9 diff. I fitted new gaskets. I will take the rear drums off this weekend to inspect the shoes and also follow Terry's advice. It's a while since I last checked their chamfer. Steve |
