MG MGA - Remove Oil Gallery Plug

I am trying to prep a 1600 short block for Hot Tanking with a caustic solution. I know I need to pull the (4) oil gallery plugs..there is one other brass plugof the same size next to one of the oil gallery plugs..I assume it needs to come out also. Whats the best method for pulling these?....and do any of the other oil plugs near the releif valve and tensioner need to be removed?
My goal is to clean out all of the oil and water passages as best as I can. I aslo need to find out a good method for getting the cam bearing liners out and refitting new ones. Would I be correct in thinking that a machine shop should press in new ones. The tool in the Service Book for cam liners looks pretty complex.

Any advice about prep for hot tanking would be appreciated...this is my first full rebuild...Tom

Thomas. The method I use to extract the oil galley plugs is to drill and tap them to 1/4"-20, then use a 1/4"-20 socket headed cap screw to remove them. I made up a piece to fit over the area surrounding the plug which the screw fits through and rotates against. The plug is withdrawn into the adapter. You could, quite probably, get by by using a 1/4" fender washer on top a a 9/16" socket for this purpose. If you decide to remove the smaller plugs, you need a smaller set up using the same principle.

You can either purchase new brass plugs, or you can tap the holes for the 1/4" tapered pipe plugs. John Twist covers all of the areas which might be removed in his Tech Manual, available through University Motors, Ltd.

After the block is hot tanked, the use of a rifle cleaning rod, and the appropriate sized cleaning brushes, to clean out the passages is highly recommended.
