MG MGA - removing bendix
Can anuone advise on how the starter motor bendix gets removed from the shaft. I,ve got the nut, spring and sleeve off easily but the control nut that keeps the restaining spring within the toothed pinion seems to be pressed or welted in, unlike the detail in the manual that shows a retaining ring. There also seems to be a washer cut to the pattern of the splines within the pinion that does not want to slide. The starter is a M35J model and the bendix makes an irritating rattle that I can,t live with any more. |

I can't help you directly as my bendix has a similar arrangement to the engine valve cotters and I used a special spring compressor. My bendix made the identical sounds to yours - quite common I believe. The replacement bendix did the same within 12 months. I got a new starter motor (not expensive) and I was amazed how fast it rotated the engine. After 50 years some of this equipment gets quite tired and I guess the starter is one such bit. Steve |

there is a tool that removes the snap ring that is under the bendix, you will need it for installing also. I have looked in all of my books they do not show a part number for it, nor a pic. Cliff |

I have put a picture of my bendix removal tool on my website: http://freespace.virgin.net/stephen.gyles/odds_and_sods.htm Steve |

Thanks for the picture Steve but have I got this right- is your removal tool when the the main spring is held on by by a split ring? For my starter with M35G stamped on the side you just remove a split pin undo the nut and the mainspring comes off with the screwed sleeve leaving the pinion that won't come off at least in my case. I've been looking into just buying a new stater at around £30 -has anyone been offerred a 10 toothed pinion instead of the usual 9 and been told its just as good! |

Correct. Mine did not have the split pin. The removal tool is for compressing the main bendix spring so that the split ring/cotter can be removed in exactly the same way as an engine valve cotter. I got my new starter from Bob West. Its cost compared to a new bendix made it a worthwhile proposition. I was not aware that the bendix came with different numbers of teeth until one of our Australian contributors wanted a check count on this item about a month ago. Steve |
