MG MGA - REMOVING THE SUMP
1588 Burning oil - not sure it's a scraper ring (compression good all-round) - need to see if there are any bits on the bottom / possibly push out a piston. Has anyone managed to remove the sump without taking the engine out ? Thanks Roger |

Eas(ier) to remove, difficult to refit. Can be done but needs some customised spanners. Check Barney’s site Going Mobile he has just done it. |

Mike - good advice thank you R |

From memory the only bolts that are a potential problem are the ones right at the front of the sump where it sits under the crankshaft pully. They should be slotted bolts so you can get a screwdriver on them as its almost impossible with a socket or spanner, hence Mike's comment about customised spanners They were originally slotted to overcome this problem, so if they are slotted your good to go. |

I have done it several times using Barneys method. It s not really specialist tools just a socket universal joint. Paul |

If it is a struggle to get the sump off and on again, just remove the engine, probably faster and easier all round..... Put the engine back in a Frogeye yesterday in two hours. |

For the record; got the sump off by raising the engine an inch. Getting it back again will require ingenuity. Dominic's advice in mind ! So far just one piston removed - other than sludge with metal debris, there is more than one type of piston. Three left still - to explain the oil consumption. |

Uh - before taking the bottom end apart, you might want to look at your valve seals to be sure it isn't the cause. It often is..... |

Bill - broken scraper ring on number 4. |
