MG MGA - Reoriented muffler and tail pipe
As I mentioned below the PO had put the muffler on upside down with the result that the tail pipe was pointed at the ground. I spun the muffler 180 degrees and the tail pipe came neatly to its station pointed at two o'clock. The happy result, other than looking right, is that the car drives NOTICABLY quieter. Even my wife noticed while on our date. The only cause and effect that I could concieve of is that in its earlier orientation the muffler noise would be reflecting off the road surface. Anyway nice result. Tysen |

You are probably right, that should make it quieter. Ever notice walking around the back of the car and step into the exhaust stream how much louder you hear the exhaust? Looking from the rear, my mufflers tail pipe is at the 7 to 8 o'clock position. I did it this way to increase the separation from the muffler to the fuel tank. My closest point it about 1 1/2 inch. Some say there is really no concern, however I will keep it that way for my piece of mind. What is your closest distance from the muffler to the fuel tank? Think about this: Would pointing the tail pipe up make the exhaust fumes more prone to mix with the air that is constantly blowing against the back of our heads? Have you, are anyone noticed this affect? Ray |

Ray I just went and measured it. With the "high point" of the muffler pointed straight up its about 1" from the rim of the tank and 1 1/2" from the body of the tank. The pipe is then pointed at the 2 o'clock position. In an earlier thread Barney indicated that this is how it came from the factory which I verified looking at "Original MGA". I didn't notice any odors at all. Regards, Tysen |

Side note: the MGA on the cover of the latest Moss catalog has the tailpipe pointed down towards the ground ... incorrectly it seems. |
