MG MGA - Reply to Colyn - Radiator Parts.....

Hi Colyn,

Per your request about the bonnet to radiator felt pad for MGA, I tried it on 2 different MGA vehicles.

One with an electrical fan (Mine) and one without (My friends MGA). The one with an electrical fan “No difference”. The one without an electrical fan runs a little cooler and shows a slight differens of 3 to 4° F. less.

Hope this answers you question Colyn, thanks again for your help.

Cheers everybody, thanks for the Infos, stay safe.

Good info Mike. However, I venture to suggest there is a difference with your electric fan system. As it has a temperature sensitive cut in for the fan motor I would imagine that it holds the same overall observed temperature on the dashboard gauge by simply cutting in as required to maintain it, with or without the felt.

Thanks Mike,
I have always wondered if the pad made any difference to the running temperature.

I will get around to fitting one eventually, but my engine runs at around 175 to 185 degrees in the summer and between 165 to 170 degrees in the winter and so it has never been a top priority.

Steves engine runs so cool that I am surprised that he hasn't removed his bonnet pad to make it run a bit hotter! :^)

Cheers

Absolutely. No need for all that bolt on Propellor bits at the front. But, I will concede that it's temperature sensor/switch probably maintains a more stable temperature on the gauge than the standard thermostat and mechanical fan alone is capable. The only difference with or without the felt (as I said before) is how often and for how long your electric fan has to run. i.e. without the felt the radiator is likely to be hotter so the fan runs longer to maintain the same stable temp on the gauge. You won't see that 4 degree drop mentioned when you install the felt. Just the fan will run less and save you money in the electric meter.
