MG MGA - RESTORATION ISSUES TO RESOLVE
I'm finally continuing my restoration and I have a new issue and an old one. 1) I'm planning to install a new sound system in a 1958 MGA Coupe and need advice on the best place for speakers. 2) I need for hardware for my bonnet latch. Where can I find the parts I need? |

Years ago i had installed a pair of oval speakers in the rear shelf of my 1500 (large shelf) and that worked out fine. Not really enough room there on my currant 1600 coupe(small shelf) |

I fitted them into my door pockets as shown

You'll get as many different answers as there are respondants. I built mine into a speaker box under the dash. L & R speakers became upper and lower. Much better IMHO for an older gent whose high frequency hearing is limited. The box could be removed if desired. I took the opportunity to add a pair of power outlets too.

If you have a sports exhaust fitted Gerard like on my car, then you wont be able to hear the radio at all until you stop! It is so noisy that I even struggle to hear my ipod playing on full blast! Colyn |

Not exactly high fidelity stereo, but I fitted two speakers in a V configuration behind the original speaker grille. Easy fit and sounds great (to me anyway) |

I have a couple of bulky, highish output speakers. The passenger one is fitted in the natural 'V' against the front outboard wall (top photo). The driver's speaker is kept out of the way (did not want it to interfere with the pedals) underneath the dash (bottom photo). It is fixed to the bulkhead above the outboard dashboard stay. Great sound and audible even with earplugs at speeds of 70++. Steve |

Thanks fellas! Steve I like the placement. what brand and size of speakers are they? Can anyone help me with the bonnet latch parts? I seem to me missing the flat piece. |

Gerard The speakers are quite old (80s/90s) and were made by Audioline. They are wedge shape rear shelf speakers. Approx 6" square and about 5.5" deep. It was just by chance that I discovered they fitted quite nicely in the 'V'. On your left hand drive car you may find that this position does not interfere with the left (clutch) pedal. On my RHD car, the right (gas) pedal is well over to the right and I was concerned about potential interference, so I mounted that one up higher. Steve |
