MG MGA - rev counter
My rev counter has been eratic lately, bouncing about a bit at tickover, but recently wouldn't drop below 2000 when driving. I have taken the cable out, cleaned the sticky old grease off, sprayed it with some silicone lubricant, and it seems better. However, when the engine is turned off, the needle sticks at the 500 mark. I have searched the archives with no success. Any ideas? Regards Nigel |

Your gauge needs to be overhauled. If you are good at intricate work, you can do it yourself. Here is a good article about disassembling and repairing Smith/Jaeger speedometers(tach is just like speedo without odometer). If you are not sure of your ability, best to have it overhauled by an instrument shop. Haven't seen one recommended on your side of the ocean, but there probably is one there. |

Also, the cable needs grease, not silicone spray. |

Thanks Jeff, i thought I was being clever, using a modern silicone lubricant. Oh well. |
