MG MGA - revisiting side mirrors for the coupe

Has anyone actually put those clip on door mirrors on their coupe or seen them on one?

The one I have on my roadster is fastened to the lower pillar/windscreen bolt. Works fine. Tried using bullet mirrors but too restricted a field of view.

Steve
Steve Gyles

Great, Steve, where did you get it and I'm not clear which bolt you're speaking of.
Barry
Baz

It is one of the semi-domed headed countersunk machine bolts that holds the windscreen to the support pillar. I bought the bracket and mirror from Bob West over here in the UK but I believe they are available your side of the pond. I will take a picture of my arrangement and post the link here tonight.

Much appreciated, Steve, thank you.

I saw a neat mirror on a coupe in Grand Rapids last year. It clipped on to the fender in front of the door, with the clamp just fitting in the gap between the fender and door. I couldn't locate the owner to ask, but it sure looked like it was designed for that application, was it an MG option or a period accessory...?

George, it would be interesting if someone had more info on that mirror. But if nothing else comes up I think I'll go with Steve's solution.
Thanks,

I have emailed you 4 piccies of my mirror arrangement.

Steve,

I'm sure that, like me, everyone is going to ask to see your pics. Could you post a link?

Thanks,

Baz,

Holden/UK shows on page 152 of their mail order catalogue 12 different mirrors, they call them overtaker (clamp on) mirrors. The one I got is number 094.330 but so far I couldn't check as there are no floor boards or seats in my coupe.
check at www.holden.co.uk

Thanks Steve, the pics are great. I'll have to take a carefull look at the coupe to see if they'll work.
Siggi, I'll check out Holden, thanks.

I have kept up to speed fairly well with IT, but I make no claims to my website design capability. My efforts with my 10mb of space provided by my ISP are pretty basic. Nevertheless, I will post a link later this evening and you you will see my mirror arrangement along with all the other trivia.

Steve,
Thanks. Your site was interesting and the car looks great. My car has an opposite history to yours. Mine is also a 58 but it is a British car. Originally arctic white, it was red when I bought it freshly "restored" (read butchered) in Kent in 1985. I moved it to New York when I moved here in 1986 and it is now in my second home in Florida. It has just had extensive body work (mostly corrective) and a paint job and hopefully I'll get it put back together over the winter. I had the old wing mirror holes welded up during the work. The mirrors were next to useless. I've kept the car right hand drive just in case I come back to the UK one day - so the position of the mirror is especially important. Did you make the mounting? If not where did you get it?

Dan
Dan Barton

I made mirror mounts like those on Steve's car after seeing pictures of one made by Bob West. The only thing I did differently was to shorten the mounting stud on the mirror and use a chrome plated acorn nut to hold them in place. I get a lot of comments about the placement of the mirrors, especially from those that have just drilled holes in their fenders! I am very pleased with the location of the mirrors, and they are very functional.

Dan

Many thanks for your comments. My brackets are from Bob West. I have mislaid his email but I will give him a ring this morning and find out some details for you.

Dan

I have spoken with Bob. His brackets are made locally so are not readily available in the likes of Moss. His brackets cost about $9 and the mirrors about $22 plus postage. If you are interested, email him on srx210@aol.com

FWIW SRX210 is the registration number of his famous mga twin cam Le Mans Racer as shown on my website.

George,
The Coupe you saw in Grand Rapids last year was probably mine, and the side mirror, clamped between the fender and door, came from JC Whitney. It works great.
Mike
Mike

Hi Mike. JC Whitney, I wouldn't have guessed! When did you buy it, do you know if its still available (I don't see it in their 2004 catalog). Was your car dark green?

George

Hi Baz

Don't listen to Steve, he's a hazard on the road! I've got mirror's on my coupe that clamp to the quarter light glass, they're pretty good and can be removed easily. I've tried other period mirror's but nothing fits the coupe and gives a good vision.

Hi Terry

Been wondering where you have been. Not bumped into each other for while! Are your mirrors the same as mine?

Steve
Steve Gyles

Terry, Steve is a fine fellow and is trying to help. Tell me about your mirrors. Where did you get them and how can I get them?
Thanks and cheers,
Barry
Baz

This is just a question, but has anybody seen the inside rear view mirror attachment that places the mirror on the roof (hood)? I have a coupe with such an attachment made out of clear plastic. The coupe mirror looks like it was meant to be up there.
mike parker

Course if we put the mirror on the ventapane, we can't open it to get better air circulation. As thought the coupe would need that.
Baz

From what I understand about Coupes, if you ain't sweatin, you're not having fun.
mike parker

I fabricated brackets similar to those shown on Steve Gyles' website for my Coupe, the difference being that they attach via the two bottom pop rivets securing the chrome trim surround to the door frames. Works very well, and can be easily removed without damage to the bodywork.
Joe Gates

Baz

Ignore the banter between Terry and myself, we know each other well from Le Mans. Our As rolled into each other at traffic lights (not on the circuit), although I would add that I was stationary! The point he makes about a mirror clipped to the Coupe quarter light window is relevant. Perhaps he can give you more detail on his arrangement.

Steve
Steve Gyles

Very good Steve, I see you don't need my protection.
Baz

Hi Baz
I bought my mirrors from an auto jumble, I'm not sure if Moss stock them, I think I have a catalogue with them in, I'll have a look for you.

Steve - I've been busy, not doing much with the MG at the moment. I,ve bought a ticket for Goodwood Revival on the Sunday (£42!!), are you going? I've also been to the Nurburgring Old Timer race meeting in Germany with my friend who races

Regards to all

Terry
Terry Drinkwater

Thanks Terry.
Baz

Hi Baz

Try www.holden.co.uk They have clamp on mirrors, I bought the rectangular type, I see they also stock round ones. I've been pleased with mine, they look the part and you don't have to drill the panelwork
