MG MGA - RIMS

Can anyone give advice regarding the largest size Rims and Tires that be used on an MGA without making any modifications to the body panels. Thanks.
Dan Clark

Normally we stick with a tire diameter of 25 inches to maintain the correct look, ride height, and speedo reading. I have 15x5.5 Saab minilites with 195/65R15 that go inward 3/4" and outward 3/4" so the look is pretty good. I has a tendency to rub a 5/8"MGBGT swaybar after more than one full turn of the steering wheel. The Moss offered 15x5.5 minilite has a larger offset so 205/60 or 215/60 can be used for a wider tire. It tends to look like it fills up the wheel wells more, your choice. Hope this helps.

On this issue - can 6" wide x 15 dia Dayton triple laced wire wheels be used (I believe Barney's site mentions 5.5" but I have heard stories of 6 " being used). If so what is the maximum width tyre that can be used with them?

I use 15" x 6" Dayton (Triumph TR6) wheels with 195 65s on my A with no clearance problems, works great!

Thanks Russ, that is encouraging now I only have to wait for Santa Claus to drop them down the chimney. Has your car been lowered?

Hi Mike,
My Maggi is very original except for the stage two engine, has not been lowered, all springs etc. are original. The 195/65 are a bit smaller diameter than the stock 195/70, giving a lower ride height and an even lower(!) final gear ratio. Accelleration is better, very sticky cornering, but highway speeds are at a bit higher (100/200)rpm, if I could do it again, I would go for 195/70 or 75 tire size.

I went for 185x65 - the 195x65 were just a bit too close to my fender lips. So of course they are even a tad lower than the tires Russ has, and I really must get around to sticking in a longer diff ratio.

Mine are on 5.5" Twincam rims.

Fitting 6" Daytons in a stock wheelwell opening will depend on offset. Get a 'test tire' off the tire shop scrap heap and mount it up to try it on the car before buying that size.

FWIW I do NOT think that the wheels I use on the Jamaican, also Dayton 6" would fit as they have more outward offset than the regular wheels. I do prefer the centrelace look though.
