MG MGA - Roadster door panels
Having looked at MGA pictures, and browsing the parts catalogue, there appears to be a metal cover strip on the bottom edge of the opening in the door panel. Is this correct, and what is the purpose of it?, as my car does not have it. Will it make it go faster? |
Nigel Munford |
Yes it will probably do about 120 with this part correctly installed The purpose is just to strengthen the door compartment. With this in I can close my door using this part to pull. |
Bob (robert) I used to own a Morris Oxford |
a hard man like you bob doesn't use the doors surely |

Thanks.there also seems to be a wooden stiffener on the inside of the panel. Where exactly does this fit? |
Nigel Munford |
It fits on the door itself, between the top of the door and the top of the pocket. It is used to pack out the panel to make a smooth run between the top of the door (below the hockey stick) and the front of the panel. |

Thanks Dominic, and presumably held in place with self tappers? i couldn't see any reference to it in either Clausager or Barny gaylords site. i will buy and fit these as part of my winter work! Regards Nigel |

As for the wood stiffeners, does anyone have a picture of a door with one of those in place? Or even a door panel with the strip mounted to it? When I got my car it had no interior panels. I have since purchesed them and the wood stiffeners but am not 100% sure where they go. Thanks, Tom |

Tom I have just been down to the garage (second time tonight - first was to look at the gear stick for another thread!). I unscrewed the door panel for you and removed the side curtain bracket to take a photograph. This is what it looks like: http://freespace.virgin.net/stephen.gyles/hot_press.htm Hope this helps Steve |

Steve, The image is very helpful for my car, thanks. I didn't know how it would be installed. Todd Clark sells the stiffener but I found the following dementions somewhere, and will probably make my own. 16" long 1" Tall 1/2" wide at top 1/4" wide at bottom Thanks again, Jim |

Steve, What Service! That is very, very helpful, thank you. We have a trip next month through the snowy mountains to a hot spring and I can now have door panels after two years of running with bare doors! Thanks again, sincerely, Tom |

Jim Those dimensions tie in with what I have on the car (16 inches is 40.5cm). I believe mine are original. I can confirm that the cross-section is wedge-shaped as your dimensions indicate. Had to do a quick re-assembly of door panel this morning! - bucketing down and had to put hood up for almost first time this winter. Glad to have been of help. Steve |

Nigel If you have not yet seen the metal trim stiffener in place have a look at Barney's website: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/interior/int103.htm Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Further to my reference to Barney's website, if you look carefully at the picture with the metal stiffener in place you can also just make out the 2 self tapped screw holes for the wooden batten. Steve |

Let's hear it for Steve, his camera and his website! He's helped a lot of us out (myself included when struggling with driving lamp/overrider problems), and a picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words. Well done, Steve. Cheers, Joe |
