MG MGA - Running Too....Cool?
I did a comprehensive service/tune-up on my car prior to the mandatory inspection here in Japan. I also replaced the bent and loose metal fan with the plastic replacement, which I have been running for about 1 year. The car has been running at its normal temperature (around 195). The trip to the testing shop, 2 hours away in Yokohama, was a nice shakedown for the car to clear any cobwebs and to loosen things up. I pushed it pretty hard and had the supercharger whizzing away. There was some stop and go congestion, too. This is Japan. On this trip however, the temp never crawled above the 180 degree range. Mind you it was freezing outside, but that never really affected the running temp in the 20 years I have had the car. Maybe a thermostat? Or maybe I should count myself lucky and not worry about it...... Tommy |

Tom I would not worry about it. Sounds much the same as mine (175) behaves. Is your plastic fan 6-bladed or the MGB 7-bladed asymmetric fan? Steve |

Tom, I have a MKII and when driven in winter months, the temp rarely goes above 180. If you're concerned about the difference between past temps and those you are experiencing now, then I'd look at the thermostat and make sure that it is not stuck in the open position. |

Matthew, Owning a classic car here is expensive. Difficult? Yes, but only with the navigation of all the bureaucracy like everywhere else I suppose. Steve, I am using the MGB 7-bladed asymmetrical fan and a shroud. It really moves the air. I like it, but as I mentioned the metal fan was fine until it went out of balance. I'm concerned only in the fact that I want it to run as optimally as possible and if at 180 it does, I will just enjoy it. It still gets as hot as an oven in the cockpit. Nice during the winter! Tommy If it gets so hot in the cockpit, what oil are you using in the gearbox? it should be engine oil, and if you are using a heavier weight, the gearbox runs very hot and makes the cockpit really much hotter. |
