MG MGA - S/S silencer/muffler to original pipe
I bought a complete stainless steel silencer/muffler exhaust system some months ago from SC Parts Group while it was on special offer.
As I'm too lazy/scared to remove the front end of the exhaust pipe, I'm planning on using only the silencer/muffler box connected to the original pipe somewhere in front of the rear axle. It would appear that the internal diameter of the new silencer is approx 44/45 mm and the external diameter of the old pipe is about the same. Is this too good to be true? Has anyone else done this? Apart from the obvious downside that the front end will need to be replaced with stainless steel eventually, are there any other downsides? I'd be glad of your advice... Eddy |

mmm false economy, i'd be fitting the whole system rather than doing half a job---------- |

I would invest about 2 hours of easy labour into fitting the complete system! Why would you do half the job now and then face the prospect of the other half later???? Get busy, Barry |

I got so fed up with failing SS mufflers, I did the reverse and fitted a mild steel muffler to a stainless front pipe. This lasted ten years until I sold my car, average time for a SS muffler to consume itself was four years, and I had a lifetime warranty! The other exhaust mod I made was to add a small muffler under the seat area, I just cut out 30 cm of the front pipe and spliced it in. This reduced noise levels considerably even when supercharged. All easy jobs! |

WHAT???!!! I thought stainless steel silencers were supposed to last forever? ....Well, longer than steel ones anyway... |

They consumed themselves because all the silencing material failed (repeatedly) and they then were effectively just a big stainless can under the car. Looked great still but totally ineffective |

Well the update is that I did install the S/S silencer on the end of the original steel pipe. The sound is, I'd say, a little more "tinny". But the surprise to me was that the new silencer box was almost 4 inches longer than the old box, see attached photo. But for me, it was a quick job. Being unable to release the old box from the front pipe, I simply sawed it off and the new box fitted in reasonably easily. Job done!! :-) ![]() |
