Oh, P28165 is probably the body number. The car was built in late 1960; possibly sold as a '60 or '61 model.

Dan,
The GHNL96397 translates into an MGA 1600
The G means MG
H is the size of the engine, H means it is between 1400 and 1999cc
N is an open 2 seater
L is left hand drive
the 96397 is the serial number of the car.
The engine number--16= 1600cc, G=MG, A=1600 series, U=Center Gearshift, H= High Compression, and the 27631 is the serial number of the engine.
P28165 is the Chassis number
Welcome to the world of the MGA owners, and enjoy the car!!!

P.S. the first book you should probably get is
"ORIGINAL MGA" by Anders Ditlev Clausager== It is most helpful (that is where I got the the above info.)

Oops--Sorry about that Kemper- (I took longer to type it than you did)

You guys are GREAT! Now an added question: sence it is a 1600 does this mean it is a twin cam?
DMC Dan Carty

Gil, Amazon.com its on order right now! Thanks again to you and Kemper!

No, it means it's 100 bigger than the 1500 MGA. Seriously though, the 1600 was the "updated" model. It had a slightly bigger engine (than the 1500), still with the cam in the block, and front disc brakes. It also had different front and rear lights. Those are the only significant changes. The Twin Cam had a completely different engine (similar block), four wheel disc brakes, and different wheels. They are the rare version of the MGA with 2111 made (as I recall).

Dan,
I think that you will find that the tag on the firewall says 'B28165' and this is the body number not the chassis number, the chassis number is 96397 as found on the ID plate and on some cars that number is also found stamped directly into the chassis cross member just in front of the seat on the passenger side floor, note: very hard to see if it is there at all. The bodies were made by Car Bodies of Coventry where they were assembled and painted then shipped by truck (err..lorry - you have to pick up the argot and know your boots and bonnets to be a true believer) to Abingdon where they were mated to the chassis and drive train. Welcome to the wonderful world of MGA ownership, I bought my first 'A' 35 years ago and I'm still hooked.

Regards,
Frank
