MG MGA - Servo Problem
Recently, when applying the brakes I get a "push back" on the brake pedal. I've disconnected the vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold, blanked off the outlet on the manifold, and the brakes work fine, although with more pressure having to be applied.
This makes me think the problem is being caused by the servo. These servos seem readily available at reasonable prices, so repair to the existing servo would probably be uneconomical. I'm curious as to what might have gone wrong with the servo, however. Anyone got any idea? David |

Most likely has a hole in the diaphram- The booster normally has vac. on both sides of the diaphram and as you apply the brakes the vac. is released from one side allowing the diaphram to pull one way helping you with braking---If there's a hole in the diaphram the vac gets back into the other side of it and braking assistance is reduced, pushing the pedal back at you a bit as it isn't being assisted properly by the booster willy |

Thank you William. That seems the most likely explanation. Regards David |

Do you really need a Servo on an MGA? I have an engine which produces almost 140 bhp in my MGA and I have never found the brake pedal to be particularly heavy (except maybe when I made the mistake of installing Greenstuff pads) My daughter drove it recently for the first time and she found the non-servoed brakes to be pretty good. Servos don't make the brakes any better, maybe just a little bit lighter to apply, so maybe now is a good time to take off the servo? Just saying :^) Colyn |
