MG MGA - setting clutch levers

HI

Against my better judgement I am cleaning up a clutch to go back into a 1959 MGA with new friction plate and release bearing but keeping the cover, springs, pressure plate etc. (yes I know it is bad policy, but the cars owner who I am helping has an economic view ! )

I note from the manual that I should set the 3 release levers using a special gauge plate.....something I dont of course possess. Any tips re an empirical solution to allow me to set the levers properly without one ??

Hi Noble. Your gut feeling is probably correct! The factory manual I have states that special gauging fixtures, or gauging plates must be used to do an acceptable clutch pressure plate rebuild. No money will be saved by your friend, if he has to pull the engine a second or third time to replace a botched home done pressure plate! I would very strongly recommend either purchasing a brand new pressure plate, or letting a specialist with the proper fixtures and equipment rebuild the old one. It is no fun pulling the engine a second or third time! Do it once, do it right the first time, and save lots of money, time and especially aggravation! Just my 2 cents worth. Cheers, Glenn
