MG MGA - Sheet Metal Color
Hey folks, after removing the tail lamps from the 1960 "A", it appears that the new red paint went over another red paint, a little different color. Perhaps the original red. The underside and engine compartment are black. Was this a factory combination in 1960? Thanks, Tom. |

Hi Thomas. I believe the engine compartment was painted the body colour, therefore black would be incorrect for a red car. The frame came from the factory painted black. Hope this helps, Glenn |

In your car I don't know which came first the chicken or the egg but all the parts of the car body were painted the same color on an "A". Try looking under the dash or under a bolted on part like a door striker as these are often not removed in a re-paint. |

The back side (inside) of the tail lamp housing should reveal the cars original color. Also, the original color can be determined by car or VIN number. |
G Goeppner |
The VIN only gives a colour for 1500. |
Neil McGurk |
In all likelihood, your car was originally black. |
Del Rawlins |
Could it be a replacement rear fender? As Kieth and Glenn said, all the body parts were painted the same color; inside and out. Including the under-dash; inner fenders; inner door; engine compartment; etc. Perhaps Del is right and the car was black. More investigation is warranted to find out. the engine comt may have been painted black to cover an engine fire. If you really want to know the original color, order a Heritage Certificate. Looking forward to what you find out. Chuck |
