MG MGA - Shim washers for rocker shaft, race only!
I am about to order a selection of shim washers in order to acurately position the rockers on the rocker shaft. This is only necessary on race engines. Does anyone else have a requirement for this? Obviously larger the quantity, the cheaper it gets!! Colin |

Colin, don't you mean spacers? |
Art Pearse |
No I mean shims to adjust the position of the rockers between the posts and the spacers used instead of springs! Colin |

I have seen solid metal tubes used in place of the rocker shaft springs, but why shims? |

Barney there are proprietory tubes available. I have a number of engines to do, and find it better to use these tubes and shims to fine tune the adjustment of the rockers. I also machine the wear off the pedestals. More off some to get the rockers in the correct place. Yes I could machine individual tubes up, but find it quicker to shim. Colin |

Okay, I get it, tubes AND shims. The shaft is 5/8" diameter, so the shims should be easy to find. |

McMaster-Carr has all kinds of shim washers. See here: http://www.mcmaster.com/#round-shims/=f7k8tx |

Barney, thanks for that a very helpful link. I was actually wondering if anyone else needed these so I could get some made. But it makes more sense to use these people. Many thanks Colin |

Colin I note that you say this is just for race engines. Does it make that much difference? Steve |

According to the experts!!! When you are aiming to get nearly double the power, every little bit helps! Colin |

If you can't find exactly what you want at McMaster; When it comes to washers and shims I think of http://www.bokers.com. Their tooling selection is simply amazing. over 26,000 washer sizes. I have never done business with them so I have no idea if they are competetive in low quantities or if they whip worldwide. With the selection of sizes and various materials, they build to order rather than stock items but do not have a minimum quantity. Might be worth a look. |
