MG MGA - Shock Problem?
I was out yesterday on the Blue Ridge Parkway here in the NC mountains when there was a clanking sound and the car felt llike uit had suddenly bottomed out. At the time I did not notice potholes but just a slight dip in the road. There were no additional noises or driving problems noticed on the rest of my 25 mile trip back down the mountain. After getting home I raised the hood/bonnet and noticed the right, front interior of the engine compartment adjacent to the bottom of the radiator had signs of a dark fluid spray. The shocks were a bit wet and the (heater) shelf behind the engine was slick with an oil-like substance. THe rad is still full and the brake master cylinder is full. Does this sound like the right front shock failed? Can I just jack the car up, remove the top plug and fill it up if the fluid level is low? I have no idea what the sound was and definitely the road conditions were not bad. Thanks for any insights and possible solutions. |

Danny, don't jack up the car, keep it on level ground. Bounce the fender to work the shock arm up and down when you're filling to work air out of the resevoir. There's info in the archives. As far as your clank noise and oil slick, I'd refill the shock, clean it off well and bounce the car pretty hard to see if you can locate the source of the leak. I think it's pretty weird that shock fluid would make it up the the heather shelf, but I guess if it sprayed into the fan..... |
