MG MGA - Should I save this crank?
The crankshaft I removed from my engine was turned .050" under on the rod journals. I know the limit is .040 so I ended up using another crank during the rebuild. I there any reason I should hang onto this crank, or just toss it (its taking up storage space!) Thanks, George |

I have had one welded up to rebuild it to stock diameters. I haven't checked the cost recently, but at least $40 per journal for the welding. So add $160 or more to the normal cost of regrinding 7 journals. For that money you may be able to buy a good used crankshaft, in which case the undersize one is scrap iron. Any clue where anyone ever found 0.050" undersize rod bearings. I though they were only available to 0.040". |

Barney, I wondered that too. I think I saved the old bearings, I'll see if there's any name on them. |

I wouldn't throw out an uncracked crank. Can you say stroker? Martin - Should. FRM |

I have a twin cam crank that has been ground with sharper than normal radius. Is it possible to have it welded and reground to reduce the stress at the radius? Thanks, Ian |

I have always wondered about the effects here. I suspect a lot has to do with welding procedure, possible pre & post weld heat treat etc. It would all vary be material as well. I would consult a professional race crank expert - who will also grind it correctly! FRM |

Just to add additional information here. Both the rod journals and the mains were turned .050. The main bearing shells are identified by the letter "G" inside a square, the letters "DD", the number S8537M, and .050 U/S. The rod bearing shells have the letter "V" inside the letter "P", both of these inside a circle, and the number G3016M. For what its worth.... George |

George- Memory here, and not looking for numbers. The "G" may be "Glacier" a long time bearing manufacturer/supplier. The "VP" is Vandervell, same deal. You might inquire of Basil Adams, easily found on MGExp boards, as he has been squirreling away Vandervell tri-metal bearings for years, and I'm sure has all the catalogues and numbers. FRM |
