MG MGA - Sierra gearbox/rubber dust cover

This thread is directed to those who have the Sierra gearbox conversion. I have attempted to put in place the standard MGA rubber dust cover in the Hi-Gear supplied bell housing. The bell housing is almost twice the thickness of the original MGA housing, and the dust cover flange is therefore not wide enough to grip onto the Hi=Gear housing. Has anyone else come upon this problem, and what have they done...I would guess that it essential to have a cover in place, to avoid getting stones and gravel/dust inside the housing?

Gary, are you talking about the rubber boot on the clutch release lever? I had no trouble at all fitting the old boot onto the new bell housing.

If it is the dust cover for the clutch, mine fits just fine. I do know Peter Gamble who makes the kits had to switch companies that makes his bell housing about two years ago. His old company could not do them any longer . I wonder if the new ones are not quite the same. If you have a problem and can not figure it out, Call Peter at Hi Gear in England for your answer. He will be very helpful. His nymber should be in the archives.. If you can not find it, let me know and I will post it for you

Mine too fits fine (about 6 years old). Just went out to the garage to search for other rubber grommets on the housing and found my SU dashpot oil sitting on the bellhousing behind the engine. I wondered where it had gone, been looking for it for ages. Must have sat there for about 6 months. Thanks Gary for helping me find it!!

I don't think that's it. I got my kit about 6 months ago and, as I said, it fit just fine.

Thanks for all the comments to date. I have since dug out two old rubber boots, and find that the width between the ribs is quite a bit more than the new one that I was trying to get in..1/4" versus just over 1/8". I'll just use one of the old ones.
This example is typical of new stock being different to the originals.
