MG MGA - Silverstone Pictures 'specials'
Here is a nice looking replica made by a Dutch guy. He made all the aluminium panels himself by hand (with no previous experience). He painted the car himself in his garage. As you can see the finish is excellent, even so he had a note with his photo record clearly stating that the car was "for fun not for show". It had an MGB five main and poly bushes, but was otherwise standard. He said he got up to 100mph on the way even with the standard (1500) rear axle and box! When I asked what revs, he said that he hadn't connected the tacho. because it was negative earth! Probably a good job too! He is now starting to make a replica of SRX 210. |

This car was in the "for sale" arena. There was no price on but I talked to the owner. He said it was difficult to work out a price as there is no benchmark. However, he wanted 15,000 because that was what it was worth to him. I think that he will struggle to find a buyer at that price, due to the detail and finish. He had made all the body panels in GRP (glass reinforced polyester or "fibreglass") including the doors and bonnet/bootlid. The original bulkhead and front scuttle was used to provide key mounting and locating points for the various components (and presumably to create a firewall). The car had MGB 5 main, overdrive gearbox and tube rear axle. As the pictures show the surface finish could be better. I wasn't impressed by the wheels either, but with a set of Realm engineering alloys (now advertising on eBay) and a quality paint job... So far this is a one off, but in my opinion there could be a market for the GRP body mouldings, which is what I told the guy. I would be interested in a set anyway! |

Neil I am really impressed. You are doing a great job in informing everyone about the cars and happenings at Silverstone. Wish I had been as observant rather than just frequenting the beer tent! Seriously though, a good job and keep it going. Bruce |

Neil, Awesome stuff. Is the dutch guy's photo record on the internet somewhere? |

Tysen, no I do not believe it is. He hadn't even heard of mgaguru.com. He (together with anyone else I talked to with an MGA) does now! He was a very humble yet highly skilled engineer. His car was done very much for his own pleasure and not for competition. The bodyshell was neither lightened nor stiffened and he had lined the interior with aluminium for appearance. There was no transmission tunnel so gearbox was open to the cockpit (with a cover underneath) which he said got quite hot! He had some nice photographs of the aluminium parts being constructed in his collection. I really hope he finds his way to this forum, reads this and shares the pictures, together with his experience! It would be great to follow his progress on the SRX 210 replica. |
