MG MGA - size of conic starter brushes
hello, can somebody tell me the length of new starter brushes -- i mean the conic (or wedge) type for the lucas 25149 starter. i have problems with my starter (he does nothing despite the battery is new) and i would blame the brushes, but they still are 13 mm (= 1/2") long. thanks for any hint walter |

Brushes are not your problem. Since the starter only runs for seconds at a time, the brushes hardly ever wear out. I have never replaced any in my life, not even for my MGA with 347,000 miles on original starter. The most common problem with the starter motor is break down of the insulation bushing where the power input stud passes through the end plate. If the bolt is loose you have a bad connection. If the bolt is tight you may have a short to ground from the stud to the end plate. |

yes barney, i read you advice in advance. but the power input terminal is ok. can it be the pull switch before the starter? but i measured current at the output of the (pulled) switch. walter |

So how much current does it draw? If it pulls 200 amps and doesn't turn the engine, you either have a short to ground or a stuck pinion gear. If it doesn't pull high current, then you have a bad connection somewhere, which you can find by poking around with a volt meter to see where it goes from 12 volts tot 0 volts. |
