MG MGA - Smiths/Jaugar RPM Gauges
I did not want to stray off topic in Martin's Jaegar oil/water gauge topic, so I have started this similar one on the RPM gauge. I have the MGB (Smiths) electronic tacho fitted (1800 engine with no mechanical RPM offtake). The 2 facia attachment holes are in the 12 and 6 o clock positions whereas the MGA Jaegar instrument has them in the 9 and 3 o clock. Is there any way I can swap them over without mutilating the Jaegar face? For example, can I rotate the Smiths innards through 90 degrees, fit the Jaegar face and then re attach the needle 90 degrees out to its original position? Steve |

Can you not just drill and tap the MGB mechanism to take the MGA face without rotating the works. If you rotate the works, you will have to drill the rear casing of the MGB gauge, and I think that the solution proposed below achieves the same result without any drilling etc.. Why not just mount the A face 90 degrees out on the unmolested B gauge, and reposition the needle using an external rev indicator to calibrate it before refitting the bezel and glass? Then fit the whole gauge 90 degrees rotated from standard B orientation in the dash. The internal works don't care about their orientation. The needle is the only calibration, which is relevant only to the face. |

HI again Steve, I had exactly the same thing i.e. an mgb rev counter with 1950 cc motor, I sent a MGA rev counter off to these people http://www.jdo1.com/page8.html and he fitted the electical bits into it and calibrated it for me all for £55, I now have what looks like an original MGA rev counter from the inside of the car but working with electronic internals gordon |

Gordon Thanks for that. I will give them a call and discuss. I also have my speedo to be adjusted for the 3.9 diff. I can kill 2 birds with one stone. Steve |

Then all you need to do is glue a drive on the engine block and route a cable through the firewall to the drive and the illusion will be complete. On good question however would be why? |

Bob Agreed. However, another question could be why not? Something to do I guess until I can afford a supercharger to play around with! As you know, my car is now nowhere near original build standard. However, if I have the parts lying around that can make one or 2 of my modifications look about right to the more than casual observer then I will consider using them. Part of the fun seeing what I can engineer. Steve |

Hi Bob thanks for that idea I waswondering what to do next gordon |

Yes good one Steve I think the dumby cable is just the ticket. :+) |

What is a 'Jaugar'? What is 'dumby'? I thought us in Somerset couldn't talk proper. Also is 'waswondering' a Cornish pastime (Pasty?) or can anybody do it? Trouble with 'waswondering' in Cornwall is that there are to many cliff top's, lovely place though, my coupe is Cornish Terry |

Terry Comes from being part of the European Union. So easy to get the E&U confused. Steve |

I think Terry you will find the noun dumb is written dumb, isnt it. So therefore dumby should not be written as dummy? Should it? |

careful some of us have to live down here, so far behind the times they think the MGA is the latest offering , can't wait till they see an MGB gordon |

Been surfing the winternet for some answere's. Jaugar - was almost the name of a sports car, but then a cat ran across the road, the rest is history. Dumby - was a cartoon elephant, I think Waswandering - are a Cornish folk band, they play at the Port Gaverne Hotel on Saturday nights ( good beer to be had there). What's a noun? surely you mean nun ? Nothing is to much trouble Terry |

Terry I am beginning to worry that I let you drive so close behind me on the way to Le Mans! Steve |
