MG MGA - Sound deadening

MGOC Spares do not do the dash sound deadening material that conveniently had all the holes cut out for the heater, master cylinder etc.

Where can I get one and do people advise me to use one or are they a waste of time ?

Thanks

Moss stock this item. It fits behind and under the heater panel - not the dash. I made my own, but can't comment on its effectiveness as the car is still under restoration.

Moss has it. It is a nice piece of work, and it does wonders at noise suppression as well as heat and cold insulation. See picture.

I bought one about a year ago, so things might have changed.

Moss ( and others ) listed RHD and LHD versions. The one I got from NTG fits either, you have to do the finish cutting for the pedals assembly. It looks to be the same material that Barney describes, all the holes for cables and wiring etc are accurately punched. I had to trim a little around the scuttle braces ( could be variations in actual cars ).

NTG catalogue item no J065 PAD-UNDER DASH, and was significantly cheaper than elsewhere.

Yes the Moss sound deadening does work under the dash and so does Dynamat everywhere else. I have it all over my Coupe and have a quiet and cool coupe.

Definitely worth the money. The Moss kit has all the holes already cut out in the correct space. Plug all holes not occupied by wires.

With the Moss kit or Dynamat installed, will the standard rubber grommets fit to reduce/fill the holes?

The contemporary road tests (of the coupe) commented on driving compartment noise so when restoring my 1600 coupe I blocked/insulated all of the firewall with sound deadening mat, grommets and so on. I started by putting the lead light in the engine compartment and blocking all of the "stars" with silicone, etc. I cannot comment on its effectiveness but the car is quite pleasant to drive.

It's also well worth making sure that the space between the lateral top-hat bracing that runs between the top of the bulkhead and the cowl is also (still) packed with the felt strip to avoid a lot of hot air and noise coming through the gap.

M.D, with the Moss firewall kit installed I was still able to install all the grommets and plugs in the firewall.

Also ditto Dominic's comment of the cowl padding.

Barry:

Has the silicone held up over time? I need to fill lots of "stars" and crevices in my coupe's fire wall. The heat isn't too bad, it's fumes and occasional water that I want to keep out. Wondering if silicone is the best way to go.

MD, The silicone has held up very well. I finished up covering the whole firewall with foam that had thin lead sheet between the two layers. The factory, or perhaps a previous owner, had glued thin plastic "sponge" to the firewall but that (I am told) does nothing to prevent the transmission of sound.
