MG MGA - Spark plug wires and caps
I recently purchased some spark plug wires and caps from Moss and the resistance of the wires and caps is just over 10,000 ohms. Barney suggests that it should be in the 3-5000 ohm range for suppressed caps. Is this too much resistance and if so where can I buy non suppressed plug caps? Thanks Andy |

The resistor wires and caps are for radio noise suppression. This used to be important for vintage radios, but not so important for modern radios. It is also important for modern cars with lots of electronic gadgets (like electronic engine controls), but that is not relevant to vintage cars. If you want the suppression feature, you need resistor HT wires or resistor plug caps, or resistor plugs but one of these features is enough. If you have to much resistance in the HT circuit it may interfere with spark output of a vintage type ignition coil. Resistor HT wire should be about 5000 ohms per foot. Resistor plugs about 5000-6000 ohms. Resistor caps about 5000-6000 ohms. Anything above 10,000 ohms total is too much. |
