MG MGA - Speaker and grill removal.
Hi All. Is it possible to remove the speaker and grill and chrome surround with dash still in a fully working car? As I will never fit a radio I thought I would replace speaker and grill with an ammeter. Thanks. |

I would suggest it easier to drop the dash down. The original speaker housing is quite difficult to fit around the dash wiring loom, so I would guess removal is equally difficult. The chrome surround and grill are unbolted/riveted to the dash and should be straight forward. Fitting the ammeter/wiring and surround would also be easier. Good luck |

I believe that a voltmeter is of much greater use than an ammeter. A voltmeter tells you battery condition, generator charging performance, and load on the system. A voltmeter has the added advantage measuring simply between the + and - with a very small current passing through the instrument. An ammeter has to pas the total current flow through the instrument (except the starter motor current). Mick |

A possible easier option would be to mount it on a supplementary mounting under the dash like this gauge on mine. Steve |

Or this one on mine? (Sorry, it turned sideways!) Bruce. |

I don't see how you can remove the chrome surround without taking the dash out. The chrome surround is riveted to the dash with two rivets on top and two rivets on the bottom. You can kind of see the rivets on the top of mine in the attached picture. Jim |

Don't know where you will find one but this has been in mine for 40 years.
