MG MGA - spedo cable question

I remember some time ago reading about the protuding length of the cable going into the spedometer being a possible problem if too long. How long should it be. My spedo either reads too high gets stuck or won't go back to zero if the cable is screwed in tight.
Thanks

You need to make sure that it is properly seated at the gearbox end. If there is crud in the spindle on the gbx then it does't go in far enough and then you have it too long at the speedo end.

I've been sitting here measuring some parts with a disassembled speedometer and a new cable from Moss US. The short answer is 7/16-inch protrusion from the end of the outer case connector shell. The cable I have in hand is too short on the output end, at some risk of no-drive. See pictures and detailed notes here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/dash/st107.htm
