MG MGA - Speedo cable

My speedo cable only comes as far as 5-1/2" from the plane of the scuttle (I guess thats about where the dash will be when I fit it.
its looking like its not going to reach the instrument back and I'm a bit suspicious that I have a RHD cable, not a LHD.
The speedo is to be to the R of the steering column.
How much slack should I have here?
Art Pearse

I believe the speedo cables were the same length both for LHD and RHD at 63".

The rev. counter cable lengths were 48" RHD and 38" LHD............................Mike

I just got a speedo cable from Moss and I believe it was 66".

From the Service Parts List:
For RHD, 5' 3", or 63 inches.
For LHD, 5' 6", or 66 inches.

I think my problem may be the routing. LHD car. The cable exits the gearbox on the RHS, so thats the side of the engine I brought it up, past the clutch slave. Then it has to cross over to the LHS of the heater.
Should I be routing this cable up the LHS of the engine?
Art Pearse

Cable goes up the right side of the bell housing, attaches with a "P" clip and hex nut to one of the bolts at lower bulkhead plate to tunnel joint one position shy of the center, then over the heater shelf, past the heater, and through the bulkhead on a shortcut to the speedometer. If the speedometer is in the far left position, the cable runs under the master cylinder.
Barney Gaylord

Barney, that's the way I had it (absent the P clip) and it just seems short of where the speedo will be. I tried it just, round the left of the engine and it gives me lots more slack. Speedo and dash not in yet. There is no way my cable will reach the far left pos.

Art Pearse

Have you measured the cable length yet?
Barney Gaylord

Barney, got it right - your way. Thanks. I didn't have it running close enough to the transmission.
