MG MGA - Speedo cable for 5 speed
I am in the process of a Sierra 5 speed upgrade to my MGA. The standard MGA speedometer cable will reportable work with the angle adapter I got with the kit. The connection to the transmission howerver is about 6" further back on the Sierra than on the MGA gearbox. My current cable with the MGA gearbox was a close fit with little to no extra length. (See image.) The MGA stock LHD speedo cable is 66". I noticed on an MGB suppliers web site that the speedo cable for a MGB 68-76 O/D is 72". The extra length might be a help. My question is are the connectors on the MGB cable ends the same as the MGA cable? Thanks, Jim |

Hi Jim The answer would seem to be yes. The following link talks about implanting an MGB box into an MGA and retaining the MGA cable, so they appear to have identical end fittings and inner cable sizes. The inner cable has to be 3mm square for the instrument, so it seems logical that the other end is the same on a production car. The problem only arose on the Ford box with a different cross section drive. http://www.mgbmga.com/tech/mga4.htm My speedo is still rock steady. Very happy. My standard MGA inner cable was only just long enough on my RHD car. With your different routing I suspect it will be extremely tight. Let us know how you get on. Steve |
