MG MGA - Speedo problem
I have taken the car for a couple of spins but noticed that my speedo needle is only moving to and fro at the bottom of the display from 0 to 120. I have taken the instrument out a couple of times but could not notice anything out of place. I have changed the couple but the problem persisted. I have also gone through Barney's site but have not been successful. Did anyone have the same symptom?

Sounds like the needle is on the shaft in wrong orientation. Remove instrument from dash. Rotate trim ring to remove ring and glass. Pull needle off of shaft (which is the tricky bit). You may need to use small pry bars of a special made needle puller. Do not pull on the outer edges of the hub, as that may separate the glued-on needle from the steel hub behind. See special puller tool here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/tools/ts211.htm Once the needle is off, notice a small white dot just below the zero peg. You can depress the spring wire peg so the needle can pass the peg. Place the needle (gently) on the shaft so that when allowed to rest with instrument in upright position the needle will point at the small dot. When properly aligned, press the needle hub to lock it on the shaft. Then depress the wire peg to pass the needle, so the needle sits on top side of the peg. Reinstall the glass and trim ring, and reinstall the instrument in the car. |

My wife is curious to know if your car was photographed in Mdina. She is from Malta and has driven an MGA as an everyday car all of her driving life (since A's were new). Will get Mike Ellsmore to post a picture as I am computer illiterate. Jim |

Hi Jim, I'm surprised Charles has not replied to your question. Must be too busy right now. Yes, his car is photographed on the road to Mgarr, and in the background is Mdina. Very nice shot indeed. Frank |

Hi Jim Sorry I did not reply before. As Fran's Camilleri has confirmed that shot is below Mdina . We would only be too happy to see your pictures as well. By the way if you would wish to contact me my email address is ch.vassallo@gmail.com. |

Nothing to do with the speedo either, but very fond memories of Malta in 1970. Spent a month there flying. Loved the old buses. Steve |

Steve, Malta has changed a hell of a lot since the 70's, even the old buses have gone altogether. We use Arriva buses now, much more comfortable and no more bone shaking trips. Frank |

Frank What a shame. I used to enjoy the ride from Luqa to the main airport using airport transfers tonbridge (Valletta?) for the day's flying. I always liked the way the 'cockpits' were decked out as shrines and there was room made beside the drivers for divine accompaniment. Are the modern buses similarly bedecked? Steve |

Steve ,the photo did not have anything to do with the speedo problem but other than the fact that I feel it is a nice shot, I knew that it would bring nice memories to many of those who follow these threads and who have been to Malta in the past. |
