MG MGA - speedo problem

Any help much appreciated, I have an 1800 engine with a ford type 9 conversion. the PO had also installed a 3.9 diff which I have changed to a 4.2 the problem I now have is that the speedo reading is showing too fast, I’m not sure how much because it also fluctuates plus and minus but that’s another problem, I must add that this speedo has at some time been recalibrated for the 3.9 ford box set up , can anyone tell me if there is a speedo out there with the correct TPM (more or less) for my set up, or do I need to have one recalibrated and if I do where can I go to get this done, apologies for being so long winded, Vin

I got Speedy Cables to recalibrate my speedo. They have the process on their website which guides you through the measurements that they require.

Do you have the right angle speedo adapter on your Type 9? I had fluctuations on my readings before I fitted the adapter. After installation all the fluctuations disappeared. You are also able to use a standard MGA speedo cable. Without the adapter, the cable supplied with the Type 9 kit was bit of a botch-up. The inner cable was slightly too small for the outer cable, causing the inner cable to 'wind' up, causing the fluctuations. I believe this has been remedied on the more recent kits.

You may be able to get a right angle adapter with the correct ratio for your set up. In this case you won't need to get the speedo recalibrated.

Hi Vin,

I have a spreadsheet which does all of the calculations for you. If you would like a copy, send me an Email message and I will send it over. It takes the T9 gearbox and the modern tyre diameter into account with all available Diff and gearbox speedo drive combinations.

Also the following link takes you to some excellent info on recalibrating the Smiths/Jeager speedo.

Hi Vin
I used John D Ostick. He was quicker and cheaper than Speedy Cables at the time. http://www.jdo1.com/

Good luck
