MG MGA - Speedograph adapter
I am finally back at work on my car after months of being able to do nothing. I have refitted the right angle converter for the speedo cable, but cannot for love or money manage to connect the speedo cable to it. Can anyone supply me a few photos of a cable routing that works ? Thanks |

Dominic Not sure if this helps? These are photos x 2 without the transmission tunnel. I did replace the cable with a slightly longer one than standard with the tunnel on and it was relatively easy to fit back although the routing was slightly different near the right angle drive. |

I can't get the cable in there without taking things apart - everything is mounted, and this is the last job to do. I can't believe that it can only be done with the gearbox tunnel removed.... |

Dominic I discovered, similar to your scenario, that I could not fit the right angle drive in place because of lack of clearance with the tunnel wall. My solution was to cut a large rectangular hole in the tunnel wall. This gave me the room to fit the right angle drive and give access to the cable mount. I then fabricated a cover plate and glued a soft sponge on the gearbox side to cushion any contact with the right angle drive. Steve |

The angle drive is installed, I just can't get the cable attached to it! Whichever way I try ! |

Dominic An obvious question perhaps, but I assume you have the correct connector! The one most of us use utilises the original MGA speedo cable, not the Ford cable that is normally supplied in the kit for direct attachment to the gearbox. Just checking...... Steve |

I can connect each item to the others easily, but not when they are all mounted in the car. I just need to work out how to route the cable around the gearbox to reach the angle drive at an acceotable angle. |

Dominic I did put my cable in again with the tunnel on but like Steve I cut a hole in the tunnel to help me turn the threaded nut on the cable end. The gear drive does rotate in the gearbox under the circlip and that may make it more difficult to align. I think it will be very difficult to see what you are doing without an access hole. It only needs to be 90mm x 60mm high. |

Success - without cutting any holes.! I removed the cable from the speedo and passed it back through the firewall and dropped it down onto the floor. This gave me more slack at the gearbox end Then using large levers between the gearox and the tunnel / chassis, I was able to manipulate the the cable into place to follow the route shown in John's photos along the tunnel. I then used a long piece of stiff brass rod to make a hook, and could fish the cable down to the chassis. Then I could connect the cable to the angle drive from underneath the car with a few contortions. Then I fed a loop of speedo cable back up the bellhousing on the starter side, but pushing up to the head. Then I could pull it through above the gearbox from the carb side. Fed it through the firewall again, and could connect back to the speedo. I just need to get a new grommet for the firewall, but everything is now mounted and secure. This is the only routing I can see working with a standard cable and without hacking at the chassis around the original gearbox mounts. |
