MG MGA - Spigot bush
Anyone know the tolerances on the bush ID and shaft OD? |
Art Pearse |
Yup. Spigot bushing dimensions are same as for rocker shaft and rocker arm bushings. Nominal diameter is 5/8-inch (0.6250"). The shaft is 0.002" smaller at 0.6230". The bearing ID should be nominal size at 0.6250" (when new after installation). The 0.002" difference gives 0.001" radial clearance for oil film (similar to crankshaft bearings). |

For the price and ease to change - I would change whenever you have the engine out after say 30,000 miles service. Barney would have better experience but mine was quite sloppy after this service. Regards Mike |

Shaft is .6216, bush .6279. Guess I need a bush. But what about the shaft? I was hoping not to have to mess with the gearbox. Maybe I can get a custom bush turned up. |

Old bush came out neatly with the grease technique. |

If the shaft is smooth the size is not a problem, as the bushing can wear several thou and still be serviceable. Yes, change the spigot bushing every time the engine is out for clutch service. The bush is a cheap part, very easy to change, and such a PITA problem if you leave the old on in and it groans after reassembly. |
