MG MGA - Steering Column
Must the steering column be removed at the U-joint when the body is removed? It doesn't look like it has to be, but I wondered about the column hanging by its own weight after I remove the bracket holding it to the scuttle. What is recommended here? It seems I've seen pictures of chassis before with the steering column in place and the body off the car. Advise from anyone whose done this before? Thanks, Christopher |

I removed mine completely, but I'm not sure I had to. |

The steering column does not have to come off for a body removal but you must remove all of it's supports so why not get it out of the way. You should replace the rubber seal on the firewall anyway which will require removal. Jim |

Chris you don't have to remove the steering shaft prior to removing the body. I later propped up mine with an axle stand at the steering wheel end until I removed it do do the frame. Andy 60 Coupe getting there. |

You need to undo the upper support under the cowl, then the body will come free. The lower support is to the goalpost, so no need to touch that (yet!) |
