MG MGA - steering column

Hi guys,
I tried to put the steering cover spring over the steering shaft.
But te inner diameter of the spring is to small for the shaft.I tried to turn the windings of the spring to make the diameter bigger but that did not worked either. After a complete restoration this one is beating me. Does someone knows the trick to get that thing in place?
Thanks,
Herman

Herman.
They are all tight. you just have to turn them to open them up. some can be a real b#%^&R,

Herman,

don't let this little item worry you mate. It needs to be unwound fully, i.e., stretched as far as it can be stretched, and just slip it in. Mind you, you have to remove the steering wheel off the main tube first, slip it on the short shaft attached to the wheel, and in it goes. Don't try and put it on with the wheel in place as you won't succeed. I am assuming you have an adjustable steering wheel.

Some seem tighter than others. On one car, I took one turn off the spring using a Dremel tool with a mini cut off disc.
