MG MGA - Steering column bushes

I am ready to install new felt bushes to the top and bottom of the steering column on my 1600 roadster and I would be grateful for some advice as to whether these bushes are installed dry, or are they soaked in oil before installation, or are they installed dry and then lubricated with oil.

Any comments would be welcome.

Actually, if you oil them they tend to get hard and compress sooner. I always hit them with a lavish squirt of dry graphite before I install them and that seems to work pretty well.

If I were going to use an MGA as a daily driver I'd probably look for another solution like the hard plastic bushes Todd was turning up, but I just put stock ones back in my Mk 2 coupe and figure they should last about an other century at the preset rate of use.

The original factory recommendation was that they be soaked in engine oil before fitting. Don't like them no though and it would be much better to turn and fit nylatron bushes.

Thanks for the input - I ordered and have just received a small tub of graphite powder for use on the felt bushes as suggested by Bill.

Unfortunately I have neither the skills nor the equipment to be able to turn up bushes - is there a source for nylatron bushes ready made?

The recommendation for the Magnette was to soak them in graphited grease.

Suggest you search the archive and get in touch with Todd, he was asking about ointerest in a new batch a few months ago. He is the only source.
