MG MGA - Sticking clutch pedal
Morning All,
Hoping for some suggestions about where to start to resolve my small issue. I have a 1960, 1600. After driving the car, for an reasonable, generally in excess of 30mins, i start to get an intermittent issue, generally associated with putting the car into 2nd gear. I'll depress the clutch pedal, shift into 2nd, with no issues, but then i'll take my foot off the pedal and it doesn't rise back up and as a consequence, 2nd gear isn't engaged. If i put my foot under the pedal and apply slight pressure, it pops back up and all is good. Otherwise, I have no other problems with gear changes or the clutch, it changes beautifully. I think the pipes are probably quite old and my first thought is to change it between the master and slave cylinders, but any other suggestions gratefully received. Thanks Rob |

Sounds like the piston is sticking fully in in the master cylinder. The reason why is the issue. More likely the MC is the source of the problem than the pipe, but others will have their views. For starters what fluid are you using and how old is it? Steve |

Thoughts -
as with Steve, how old and what condition/colour is you fluid in. Condition of flexi-hose, perhaps it deteriorated internally which you can't see and is shedding and/or collapsing in use. Wear on your pedal hole and its pivot point and bushes. It might not make a big difference but do you have a pedal return spring fitted, or is it weak, broken or come off. Wear on your release fork or it's bush or fittings, even perhaps the rubber gaiter catching(?). Problem with the master or slave cylinder. I'd start with checking fluid and pedal yourself. I'd go on to, preparing or setting up ramps, or jack and stands, getting glamorous assistant on standby (the most difficult bit I find) and go for a drive until the problem shows and get back as soon as possible so car is still warm with problem. Get the car up and have a look underneath whilst clutch pedal is operated by assistant and see what happens on flexi-hose, release fork, slave, (check for leak also). Then check master cylinder for leaks, movement. |

When did you last lubricate the pedal pivot bolt? Quite possibly seizing up from lack of lubrication. |

Thanks all, Plenty for me to look at and get under the hood of. I'll work through these and see what occurs. Cheers Rob |
