MG MGA - Strange Steering Problem

Over the last week I've had this issue with my steering wheel. When centered correctly, if I turn the wheel to the left (counter-clockwise) it "sticks" - does not want to move further until I apply more force, then it makes a loud click and turns freely. This happens almost every time now. Also if I turn the wheel repeatedly (as in parallel parking) I can hear the wheel making noises somewhere down in the column and can feel the tension, sticking problem. Wondering what to look for?

Jim, Sounds like a problem with the UJ in the steering column - cheers Cam

hi jim it could be the uj joint catching on the fuel line mine did

Jim, Jack the front end, grasp a wheel and turn the steering from side to side - full lock! If you hear ANY noise please don't drive until you complete a thorough investigation. I hope it is just a fuel line fouling the steering column - but it could be a chipped rack or pinion (with the chip getting caught in the process), a loose or knackered tierod end or loose bolts in the suspension, a worn uni-joint on the column or badly worn kingpins - and more!! Look very carefully!!

My vote goes for worn steering U joint, or at least that is what it was on my car with the same symptoms....

Hey Jim,
I have a used rack and pinon I could sell you. Kep it in mind.

OK I found the problem. Those stupid carburettor overflow tubes. One of them got bent somehow and was preventing the collar of the steering column from moving freely. I just moved it with my hand and solved the problem.

I just put the SUs back on after trying a Weber DCOE on the car, thinking the SUs would be better for low-end torque. I was wrong! The Weber is far more powerful. But at the expense of gas mileage of course...

Going back to the Weber soon. I know many dispute its advantages but after trying both, I will live with the lower mileage in exchange for better performance.

Ok Jim, I am calling you out partner. High noon. Winner get a free dinner and drinks at their choice of restaurant. My choice is a little bistro in Rome. I would race you for pink slips, but I hate to see a grown man cry.
JEFF BECKER

Jim P

I didn't say anything about fair. I want a FREE dinner
JEFF BECKER

Go for an endurance race, Jim.
