MG MGA - Stuck Disc Hub

Hey fellas,

Awhile back I posted about a stuck front disc hub on my MkII. Well I got it off, and once off I couldn't find any reason for it being stuck in the first place. The stub axle was clean and the bearings are fine.

There was/is plenty of grease and no rust or anything.

So no that it is time for the hub to go back onto the car it won't. It sticks in the same place as before.

The bearing race on the back slides freely over the stub axle, but the hub itself gets hung about 3/4 of the way back, about right where it gets larger in diameter.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Christopher

A slide haammer to remove. It's supposed to be tight.

Dominic,

I got it off awhile ago, I'm trying to get it back on.

It will not slide on freely as the other side does.

The one that is sliding on freely is worn.

My 61 front hubs would not just slip on, but as I tightened the bolt to the appropriate ft/lbs the hub went on smoothly. That's the way my workshop manual recommended.

I had to put mine in a press to press the hubs out of the rotors. I don't remember any problem getting them back on. I used the bolts to pull them onto the hubs.

Another trick that would help is to put the hubs in the deep freezer for a couple of hours. Then warm up the rotors EVENLY with a torch just before installing them on the cold hubs. I have used this method for several other tight task, e.g., fitting seals in the gearbox.

I always put them on as far as I can with pressure, then use the axle nut to wind them on the rest of the way. If they slide on, the hub is worn out, and the bearing will rotate on the hub.

It's supposed to be a tight interference fit.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the brake disk being stuck on the hub ((I should read more carefully) hence my thread re freezing the hubs. I had no problem removing or installing the hubs themselves.

Hi fellas,

Thanks for all the advice. I took them down to inspect the bearing and all was OK there. Repacked them and reinstalled using the nut on the stub axle as suggested and this worked fine.

Here's a pic of my current state of affairs.

Cheers,
Christopher

The steering column is on the wrong side!

The one that slid on freely is worn out and needs attention. It should be like the other side and a really tight fit !
