MG MGA - SU Carbs and Alcohol
I have just found that one of my carbs is dripping petrol from the bottom of the jet. There is much talk in old threads about using different seals for jets. But what is the current view as what products I should use to rebuild a carb as alcohol safe as possible, jets, flaots, etc? |

Paul, I had the same problem and when I replaced with conventional seals, they only lasted a year before I had a small leak again. So I bought viton seals that I found on eBay for just £7.50p including postage. You have two use two of the viton seals for one conventional one. So far so good, so I’m happy with them. If you are interested, let me know and I will see if I can find who I bought them from. |

I have been looking through my cupboards to see if I can find the set of Viton replacement jet seals that I bought a few years ago when I planned to fit them to my H4 SUs. I never fitted them because the new engine I have now has a Weber DCOE. So, IF I find them, I will send them to , not looking good so far though I'm afraid! :^( Cheers Colyn Fantastic weekend with you guys Paul, we loved this years Scottish MGA Day Tour. Beautiful countryside, great roads to drive, plus it was such amazing weather. Can't wait for the next one. |

Teflon or Viton 0 rings are the way to go! Not available in 1955. But if you prefer organic stuff new cork is still available. Mike |

Thanks for the replies.
My immediate problem is now solved as all it was was that the alloy retainer nut that hold the seals up had come loose but I would still like to go Viton:- 1) Mike, can you send me the contact for where you purchased yours in case Colyn's offer doesn't work. 2) Colyn, yes I would love them if you can find your set. No rush as it is sorted for now so going Viton will be a winter job. I am glad you appreciated a dry run. As you know since we have been running the event we have had really bad luck with the weather until this year. Cheers Paul |

Paul, I bought mine from McMaster Carr in the US during a visit there some years ago, around $10 for 100! A club member here in Melbourne Victoria bought a batch of Viton o rings from a local engineering supply company for similar price. They seem to be readily available. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/carbs/cb106.htm Mike |

Paul, Not offended if you aren’t interested in the ones I bought! But just in case, here’s the link www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274040774699 |

Paul You can get the uprated seals and improved bearing seal kit from Burlen. https://sucarb.co.uk/carburettor-kits/jet-bearing-kits/h-type-carburettors/h-type-superdry-jet-bearing-seal-kit.html However, the full kit is out of stock at the moment but they do have the seals on their own. https://sucarb.co.uk/replacement-superdry-seal-kit.html |

Gents. If I may join in - interested in this topic. If I understand it correctly, the modern, better system is to replace cork with Viton seals as described above, either the more expensive Burlen Superdry kit approach which uses different jets (not just seals) or the much cheaper way by just buying some seals to fit the original jets. If that’s the choice would the Burlen Superdry way be best or an expensive overkill? Anyone have experience on this? Bruce. |

I fitted viton seals some years back; they made the choke operation quite tight. They also weeped a little bit on one carb, so I went down the Burlen superdy road; the choke is now very light to operate and the carbs are bone dry. Regards Colin |

Great feedback Colin, thanks. Just what I needed to hear - now I can justify laying out cash for the Burlen route! Best Bruce. |

Just thought I’d revisit this post. Following Colin’s good experience with Burlen’s Superdry jets and seals I placed a back order with them for a pair, thinking £50 wasn’t too steep a price for a prefect seal. When they came back into stock they turned out to be £50 each, not for two, ie. £100 to do the pair! The usual reasons given why everything in the world now costs more due to every reason from Brexit to Ukraine! Nice maybe, but not at that price. Decided to keep with my slightly weepy existing seals for a few more years!
